Les Miserables - A Quick Review

I'm not a fan of musicals, movies or live. It's not that I don't like them. I'm just afraid to be addicted to the catchy tunes and story, and have the OST playing non-stop for the next 3 months. Hence, like a great drug, I avoid them at all costs.

Of course, Les Miserables happened. And the drug was BACK.

Pacific Rim - FIRST TRAILER

After seeing so much news about this in Comic-Con 2011 and 2012, I missed out on the panel but got to see some cool hardware from the movie. After a media blackout since July, here's fie first trailer to del Toro's nod to Kaiju (Japanese giant monsters) and the mecha that fight them.

Countdown to 2012 - Filmography in Review

So it's been a few days since my PRK procedure. eyes are getting better, drove for the first time since last thurs. We'll see if vision improves after the contacts are removed. But as 2012 comes to a close, it's been a tradition for me to seek out the many "Year in Review" videos. From Google's Zeitgeist 2012 to the many "Movies in Review".

For now, here's Gen IP's version - he really blew me away with his 2010 version and the following years do not disappoint. Sadly, views are mainly driven on who puts theirs out first. With so much editing and blending, it's hard to keep track other than subscribe to the Youtube channel and mark your calenders yearly.

Search for them yourself, or stay tuned as I post more in the coming days toward 2013.

Video of PRK Procedure - YOU WILL SEE EYE(S)

After all the research, the years of waiting, it all came down to Friday, December 7th, 2012. Had to bail from the company's holiday luncheon/party, but I heard the raffle this year was much harder to win. Wang'sta and her bf Nick (i mean eric) was more than gracious enough to give me a ride to Sherman Oaks.

PRK Consultations, ICL Introduction, Doubts

So here's my next step in the process to having 20/20 vision: procedure consultations. I visited four different locations, most in the Beverly Hills area (just due to the proximity to where I live). This post is a bit long, but I wanted to put as much information down for anyone that is Interested.

Getting my lens cleaned, aka PRK surgery

So as much as this blog is about film, pics, and tech, we always forget that our eyes are the lens to the camera of life. Mine haven't been the best; not sure if i can attribute my nearsightedness to my forehead impact 24 years ago that resulted in 20+ stitches. Or maybe it was the hours of gaming. Either way, I foolishly funded an HSA account without looking at my schedule of 2012 and now here it is, almost November.

The time to pull the trigger on my Lasik surgery is upon me.

My consultation yielded that i'm not a candidate for Lasik due to my bad vision (think 900 to 1000 on a 20/20 scale) and my corneas are too think. PRK (Photorefractive keratectomy) surgery was my only other option besides surgical contact lenses. My friend Adam had gotten PRK because of his MMA training and the less likely chance a headshot would knock the flap loose (LASIK creates a flap on your cornea to correct your vision). The problem was with my meticulous schedule for the remainder of 2012, and how to time recovery (20 days to a few months) with what i had to complete for the remainder of the year.

At the moment, it's pending post-Thanksgiving. I'll probably be on sick leave for the beginning of my recovery, but my goal is to isolate my eyes and let them recover the fastest possible. A few blogs have updated their recovery process, so i'll do one as well.

I'll have to depart with my beloved Oakley prescription sunglasses, which have served its expensive purpose for a good transition-lens replacement. Perhaps i'll re-purpose both my frames into hipster lenses, just for old times sake...

2012 Hong Kong Trip Summary - Hot, Humid, and Hangry

So after spending an empty weekend editing the 35GB worth of photos and videos, I've finally finished my summary video for the July trip to Hong Kong. Yes, the original teaser said August but I four weeks (a wedding and a retreat taking up two of those weekends) flew by too quickly.

new blog format

I've realized that this blog hasn't gotten the attention it deserves, so i'll keep the formatting as follows:

- as many random entries as possible. usually stuff i post on fb that i say i'll post here, but i don't. some film reviews, links, but mainly random stuff.

- one major post a month, guaranteed  beit a video i've edited, tips, reviews, anything. i figure i owe it to the 3 people that read this thing anyways.

so yeah, september was pretty empty despite a trip to hawaii and a san francisco dragonboat race. but i spent last weekend re-learning Sony Vegas and a few other tools it offered. the Hong Kong trip has been 97% edited, with some last minute tweaks tonight. look for a post sometime October!

"Sight" - Seeing For You

Sight from Sight Systems on Vimeo.

Pushing the boundaries, augmented reality has gone a long way from VR in the '80s to the Yelp app on your phone. With Google Glasses and innovations in OLED technology, "Sight" is no longer impossible. A short film that touches on the benefits of having such a tool and the ultimate downfall of dependence when one cannot see for themselves.

Photography 101, Explained in Food

More and more people I know are getting into picture taking. I say "picture taking" as it's the best way i can describe photography for beginners who don't take pics for the sake of documenting a moment, but who instead capture what the subject of the picture represents. The introduction of the Canon T2i in 2009 and drops of DSLR prices have everyone running around the zoo, a wedding, and artist galleries with something bigger than a point-and-shoot. But those I've talked to still have yet to read the manual or websites on photography, but ask me instead on how to take a good pic.

I don't consider myself a photographer just yet. I just like taking really good pictures. the moment i can sell one of my pics, i'll call myself one. But back to explaining to people how to take a good picture. To start, i tell them i love food. and my best analogy of course, compares a great picture to food. I do not intend on offending anyone, so don't take it personally. So here it goes...

Samsara - 70mm Film and 4K Imagery

A friend posted this, and upon watching it, it makes me realize why film will never die. Shot in 70mm film and displayed on a 4K projector (4x the resolution of standard HD video), this will be a must in the newest IMAX theaters when it comes out.

2012 IDBF Club Crew World Championships, Hong Kong - Teaser

yes, it's kinda lame i'm editing teaser vids. but it's 11PM and i'm still at work. Would be great if i did nothing but time lapse and make vids, but quick edit teasers i feel are the best way to get something out there (half-ass) and give a realistic delivery date so people stop bugging you.

Here's the 2012 IDBF Club Crew World Championships, Hong Kong - Teaser, with gopro footage from the boat. the clamp you saw here worked out great in getting all the various angles within the boat. My trip to Hong Kong was about 9 years since my last one, and i treated it more of an away race than a vacation. The final video should be quite long, highlighting the 9+ days of spectating, traveling, eating, and racing.

Without further ado, here's another teaser!

Bridge Installation - Teaser

Just back from Hong Kong, have a day to work and prep for Comic-con. the video below was compiled from about 75k worth of photos, 250GB total. All done with the GoPro HD1 or GoPro HD2. More details will follow; it's still a work in progress.

Will try to get a teaser out on Hong Kong video as well; got some sweet 120fps shots from inside the boat. Enjoy!

How to Dry a Jersey, QUICK

So although my goal of blogging while on my HK flight didn't work out that great, here's a quick blog about how to dry your jersey, quick. Even a dry-fit you may plan on using for a few days straight in 90% humidity and 87 degrees, this method has worked out pretty well. We have folks paddling 3-4x a day for 4 days straight in some of the nastiest water the world has to offer (HK harbor). The comfort of a dry and relatively clean jersey always makes the first race a bit more bearable.

Instagram - The Death of Photography

I showed this to a co-worker. her response? "oh, that looks instagramed!".

That one comment is the sole reason why this blog has the title it does.

Film is not dead. it's barely kept alive by mass-marketed and bastardized versions. Soon, people will not know the difference between an actual photo by film and an artificially filtered one. A completely different (yet parallel) tangent to those who depend on photoshop to make their photo, not to enhance it.

A Splinter's Worst Enemy

Is duct tape lined corners.

Sorry for so many teasers and not enough background. Working on a massive time lapse involving seven GoPros and not wanting to blog about it until it's done/have no time to blog until it's done. However, the contraption you see above will be used to get one of two GoPros to overhang the side of the building. The rest will have to wait. Here's my rough method of prototyping what was above:

Upper Right: notes and dimensions b/c i didn't have paper w/ me

Everybody Farts - John Hamm

If you don't know who John Hamm is, well google him. (hate when people ask me "who is "someone" when they're txt'ing away on a smartphone). He puts the mad in "Mad Men" and has starred in some pretty popular movies (i.e. Bridesmaids) and ones from way back you may not remember.

But the coolest thing about him is the advice he gives. to teenage girls. Go watch the hunger games.

Three-Point Landing: The Cliche Landing

man, it's been almost a month since my last post! this shouldn't be happening, but it is. oh wells, got a lot looking forward to in the upcoming months. June/July will be a combined 3 weeks of vacation, so work and everything else will be on overdrive until then. Still have a weight loss bet for end of July, but the Hong Kong foodfest will mean I have to lose it prior to the trip!

Anyways, here's a pretty cool video with something we have seen before, but is apparently humanly impossible to do at falls above 2 feet....

Prometheus - Android Ad

It may be the one movie I MUST watch based on all the blog posts I’ve done. Here’s the latest one staring Michael Fassbender (or F. Assbender as filmdrunk coins him) as a Weyland android. Those that follow the “Alien” lore know about Ash and Bishop from the first movies and the roles they played in Ripley’s love/hate relationship.
What’s even stranger is I watched “Shame” last night, which Fassbender acted in as the main character. Distributed in limited theaters due to its NC-17 rating, it’s a story of a sex addict living in NY and coping with a difficult relationship with his younger sister. With so many movies in recent years (X-Men First Class, Centurion, etc), Fassbender is rising on my list of favorite actors with versatility to play interesting roles no one else will do.

Hambuster - A Short Film

Work's been crazy so even my pending posts haven't been touched. here's a great short film (NSFW on the account of gore and possible veggiesaurs of your office) that has all the action of Michael Bay, combined with the lessons learned of "Supersize Me".

Youtube may be about cute cats, music videos, and viral pranks...but never forget it's the best format venue for filmakers to spread their works around the world. (yes, i do recognize Vimeo). And for those that remember the pre-youtube days, atom films...

The Mega Millions Lotto Frenzy, or "Aww i only won $7???"?

So after three weeks of headline news, the final jackpot of $640 million (estimated) has been won. Tickets were sold in three locations:

Red Bud, Illinois (quick pick)
Baltimore County, Maryland
Northeast Kansas

Winning number 2-4-23-38-46, Mega Ball 23.

The odds of the mega number being the same as the first 5 were pretty rare. but then again, so are all the numbers. I myself was part of three separate pools, with my office's $5 being the largest (18 tickets).

Alas, none of us got even close to a "jackpot". Two got 3 numbers, which netted $7 each. getting the megaball number got us $2, and one megaball & one number got us $3. A lot of other people i've seen on fb got small amounts, and no doubt anyone participating in one of history's largest lotto fever won something. But how do you split such small winnings among a group of  people?

Well, here's a few fair ways:

  • dozen donuts
  • a ton of donut holes
  • bucket of KFC
  • water balloons for a water balloon fight
  • more lotto tickets
  • scratchers
  • a 6-pack of beer
  • cookies
  • a trip to dave & busters

Of course, you can always ask for pennies at your local bank and be that cheap. Until the next half-billion dollar jackpot...

Jiro Dreams of Sushi – Movie Review

This is my first real attempt at reviewing a movie; minor spoiler alert as this is my first time. Next time I must remember to bring a notepad to take notes while viewing; wonder how the real critics do this?

“Jiro Dreams of Sushi” has been passed through many food blogs as a must-see film about the most revered and famous sushi chef, Jiro Ono. For a person that loves food, loves sushi (but doesn’t eat sashimi), this is one film I’d rate as the best for 2012.

Prometheus - Wonder Con 2012 Trailer

San Diego's Comic-Con precursor (Wonder-Con) is usually held in San Francisco's Moscone Center. great for my friends in SF that don't have to travel far to get some great sneak peeks without a hefty daily price. However for 2012 Moscone is under renovations so they moved Wonder-Con to Anaheim. Still waiting to see the opinions of the new location, but already a few have said it's just not the same.

Anyways, here's one film I've followed since SDCC 2011; Ridley Scott's new spiritual prequel to the "Alien" saga. The new trailer:

Original? probably. Eye-opening? maybe. The fact that Scott is back at the helm of the franchise that he started? I'll def be watching this opening weekend.

Here's a screenshot of the infamous "space jockey" from the first "Alien" movie:

Carmelogeddon

Bill Kostroun/Associated Press
As fast as Linsanity brought the fans back to the Knicks, Carmelo's return has created a cloud that will ruin the synergy of a team. Why can't people just learn to put aside their egos and play as a team? better to lose as a team than win as an individual.

It's Carmelogeddon out there. and the only cure is more Linsanity.

Peter Weyland's 2023 TED Talk

My first glance at Ridley Scott's new film "Prometheus" was at Comic-Con 2011. great panel, a direct interview with Scott filming near the north pole, and Charlize Theron talking about her role as a "spiritural" precursor to Ripley from the "Alien" series.

Between the recent "Predators" and "AvP" movies and the upcoming "Prometheus", it will be very interesting on how the film will end. Scott has insisted that "Prometheus" is NOT a prequel to his first A"lien" film, but having Guy Pierce play Peter Weyland and the corporation "Weyland Yutani" appear in the
1978 "Alien" film means a surprise ending will be instore.

Can't wait! fyi, move is completed, stay tuned for a post on the new apt

2012 Film/Cinematography Camera Comparison Chart

There's a ton of blogs I subscribe to via Google Reader, and one of them is NinoFilm (http://ninofilm.net/blog/) His site mainly focuses on DSLR filmaking after Canon's release of the T2i in Febuary 2010 and the niche market it filled. In a recent post, a chart of the most commonly used film cameras used in today's youtube/blockbuster/indie films was listed out so that one could compare sensor sizes, rental rates, and other tech specs of what the pros and amateurs use.

Page 1 of 2, seems that these ar the cream of the crop

Page 2 of 2, with some Phantom cameras pushing 2564fps at 1080p

There you go. The first post about "where's the film". It's above, in sensor sizes, gigabytes per second, and insane frame rates. Check out the list of films each camera as used in as well; the Canon EOS C300 made it in there, along with the RED Scarlet. Rental rates seem reasonable, but check with your local stores (the chart was based out of Chicago).

getting an arrow to the knee is no joke.

Virgin America - The Best Flight Delay Experience

I encountered my first memorable airport delay, and I’m very surprised how it turned out. The planned trip to come home for Chinese New Year was done at the end of October 2011, scoring a sweet (but annually predictable) $90 RT from LAX to SFO. Then the long awaited winter storm finally came.
It all started with a very long work week. 14hr days flew by and I still felt I needed more time. The feeling of a Wednesday feeling like a Thursday was all too familiar. On Friday, I blew through a 3hr jobwalk in an hour and was able to leave by noon, hoping to catch the 1:35pm flight. Found a cozy spot on the 5th floor of my usual airport parking structure but didn’t make it through security until 1:30pm. By then, I had learned the flight I had hoped for was heavily delayed due to SFO’s strict guidelines on bad weather.

Photo courtesty of http://www.virginamerica.com/
For those that don’t know, I’m a huge Virgin America fan. Their frequent flyer program is fine-tuned for short distance flights like LAX-SFO, and combined with their credit card the 8x points earned means a free flight home is much easier to obtain. I’ve never had problems hopping onto an earlier standby flight, and was even able to sneak into an earlier one since I’m usually 2hrs early to the gate. But today was no such hope as ALL afternoon flights were delayed from LAX to SFO. It was 2pm, my original 5:35pm flight pushed to 7pm, and people starting to slowly trickle in to go back home.
Luckily, the VX people are always helpful and advised me which flights had fewer standbys which would increase my chance of leaving earlier. VX has a great standby system in which you can either be unconfirmed (free) or confirm your seat ($25). There was a “main cabin select” (VX’s premium economy designation) available, but the standard upgrade was $39 (free baggage, still a good deal). However, in order to confirm that seat, I’d have to pay the $25 on top of the $39 upgrade fee. Not a bad dent to an original $90 RT flight, but with every flight delayed I wasn’t sure if there was any benefit in the long run besides free booze. Flight 933, which was scheduled to depart at 4pm had yet to have any standbys so I opted for one that would at least get me out an hour earlier. By now people had started to pour in. The time was 2:00pm.

Sushi here was not worth it at all
The lack of preparation started to affect my stomach, as one cup of rushed coffee and no breakfast or lunch meant the wait was going to be painful. I had opted not to bring my Starbucks gift card, and it was now sitting in the parking lot as the thought of an overpriced egg salad sandwich was dancing like sugarplum ferries. The old college trick of “bread fills all” kicked in and 20min later a moderately priced chowder bread bowl from Gladstone’s Fish Restaurant was being devoured. The restaurant itself was packed with everyone else who was delayed, and the frustration meant booze was flowing aplenty. For me, curled up and catching up on episodes was much more appealing than getting in a drunken sports debate.  I was ready to wait this night out; the laptop made me feel invincible.
As the late afternoon turned into early evening, the truth became evident; our flights were not going to be departing as expected. A cute couple plopped down in front of me and had a gateside picnic, while others paced back and forth, expressing their anger and frustration over  a power-starved smartphone. 6pm became 7pm, and 7pm became 8pm. The wife of the cute couple had already gotten frustrated and insisted that the husband book an American Airlines flight to Oakland airport, rather than SFO. As if on cue, the kid bluntly stated she needed to take a #2.  My Acer Timeline X finally ran out of batteries after 4 hours of nonstop video. All the charging kiosks were filled with thirsty iphones and androids, drained from the constant facebook updates and Pandora streaming. When it was finally announced that flight 933 was going to be boarding at 8:30pm, VX had pushed its last flights of the night all together to take off at 10:15pm. Then came the moment of truth, to see if the sold-out #933 would have enough frustrated people bailing out so I could go home and see Cheese.

Seeing everyone crowded around the customer kiosk, I was a bit irked as I’d already seen a few people try and hope it was still 1980 and they could get a standby ticket despite all previous flights sold out. Most look like they just got to the airport and failed to realize many on standby arrived the same time as me. The attendant started printing the tickets, but I was too nervous to count how many she printed to calculate my odds. Going alphabetically didn’t help either as I was forever a Wong and never a Huang. But on the last ticket available, my name was called and I finally felt like things were looking up. 933 had already boarded and I rushed down the concourse, hoping that overhead space was still available and some idiot didn’t shove a purse or messenger bag above rather than inconvenience their feet from stretching out.
11C was my designated oasis from the crowded Terminal 3. I saw some empty seats, probably belonging to people who had requested standbys but never heard their name and opportunity to leave the mayhem of LAX. At 9pm, a voice came over the intercom: “Apologies, but we missed our flight window to take off. We want to fill all the seats, and due to this inconvenience we are now to depart at 10:15pm.”

Of course, groans echoed through the cabin, and coupled with the fact that FAA regulations do not allow the serving of food prior to takeoff (water was passed out), some people just started getting annoying.  The person sitting next to me shared the same viewpoint: better safe and late than DOA. Furthermore, we were already on the plane, did not have to worry like those still in the gate, and most importantly each economy seat on VX had a power outlet. No longer did I have to fight with the 400+ people in the terminal like a hungry piglet fighting for some nutrients, as the utters of electricity was a standard feature on all VX flights. My procrastination of not transferring all my House of Air time lapse vids and Costa Rica trip off the 750GB laptop also meant I could kill time with nostalgia.
House of Air's catwalk under construction, circa Summer 2010

drainage was pretty poor; huge puddles just built up right in front of the exit of Terminal 2
And so, an hour later with turbulence that actually made me nauseous, I was finally back home. At midnight. What an exciting 12 hour adventure; to me the weather delay wasn’t even a problem. It was just interesting how people handled the situation at LAX, some thought they could receive special treatment, others opted to forfeit their ticket price and buy a second one the next morning. And the family that left the gate to peruse the American Airlines flight to OAK? I had warned them about the Occupy protest, so hopefully their trip was ok.

getting picked up at departure is better for late night arrivals
Like any other delay, your frustration and complaints won’t make the FAA change its rules.  A lady sitting in front of me called the attendant over to voice her displeasure that the pilot didn’t take off during our window of opportunity and instead made everyone wait an hour more.  One must vent their frustrations, be it steam or explosion, but in the end it’s no use stressing over something you can’t change. Virgin America already had enough amenities and provisions to entertain you no matter how long you’re on the tarmac; bigger airlines frankly won’t give a rat’s ass. Be glad you have a seat, be glad the flight isn’t completely canceled, and just overall – be glad.

Oh yeah, I also got this in my inbox this morning. Serious brownie points to Virgin America; you may not have the best customer phone service, but everything else is at least better than the competition.

So for the 2nd year in a row, I went to CES. about 60GB of time lapses, 20GB of gadget reviews and interviews, and about 800 photos.

Look forward to some posts about new tech, old tech, and casino games I felt were worth or not worth my money.

Martin Luther King Jr Day - Significance to the Next Generation

It's sad when KassemG shows us how people lack the knowledge of a great civil rights leader. When parody brings out the truth, it can be one of the saddest moments. His demographic of interviewees was probably not accidental either. For those who forget, pause your Angry Bird session and just wiki MLK. Everyone is due for a refresher in history; don't forget what you've learned the first 18 years of your life.

just found another delicacy within a delicacy; the top layer of super fatty tonkotsu ramen, after a layer is formed. all flavor, no water.

First Post

after all those years on Xanga and posting hundreds of links on fb, i've finally graduated to a real blog. Look for extreme in-depth gadget reviews, travel photos, video productions, time lapses, and just blasts from the pasts.

I chose "Where's The Film" in hoping i could get a website called "WTF", but unfortunately the idiots who have those already haven't updated in two years. The title represents the shift away from film and to digital media for the standard consumer, something that is evident in the past 8 years alone. VHS & cassette tapes, amateur cinematography, and the upsurge of affordable SLR cameras have all contributed to the way we document our lives and the frequency we do it. I have much respect for film as digital is yet to capture the same quality for the same price.

So yeah, that's the concept behind this blog. that, and even with Facebook's Timeline feature, that shit ain't gonna be around forever. Enjoy!
